PC-USA 1996-08-28 - Don't Worry

I don't know about y'all, but I know that I myself am a worrier. It's a bad, long-standing habit I am working on breaking, but I still have a ways to go! I must keep reminding myself that worry is a sin, and not only that; there is no logical reason to worry. I find myself jumping ahead of God sometimes, as if He can't be trusted to take care of things, when in actuality I should trust Him completely. After all, who loves me more than Him? No one. We are so valuable to Him!

Mat 10:29-31 (NIV) Are not two sparrows sold for a penny ? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

He loved us SO much that He made a sacrifice that I can't even fathom doing myself--allowed someone He loved deeply to suffer, for our salvation:

John 3:16 (NIV) "For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.

And indeed, to not trust God is actually a sin:

Heb 11:6 (NRSV) And without faith it is impossible to please God, for whoever would approach Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him.

There is two more logical reasons I can think of, to not worry: (1) I believe the statistic is that 95% of what we worry about never happens anyway! And also (2) worrying doesn't help a bit, as Jesus pointed out!

Mat 6:27 (NIV) Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

Dear Lord, please help us to trust You more, and to worry less. In Jesus' name, amen.
