PC-USA 1996-09-13 - A God Who is Close to Us

In my daily devotions earlier this week, I ran across a verse that kinda jumped out at me:

Deu 4:7 (NIV) What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the LORD our God is near us whenever we pray to Him?

And some people today, believe in a distant power, a type of force, that might even be benevolent, but we know the truth; instead, we have a caring, loving God who is always there for us. He has all the power in the universe, but He loves us so much He wants a personal relationship with us; that is how close He wants to be to us. He wants so much to be close to us, that He sent His own Son, whose very name, Emmanuel, even means "God with us!!"

Even when we feel we are alone, we truly are not ever alone:

Mat 28:20 (NIV) and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

He is always there when we are hurting:

Psa 34:18 (NIV) The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

Our God is not only close, but He really cares about what we are going through:

Mat 9:36 (NIV) When He saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

Unlike false gods, who have no power, our Omnipotent God can save us, and wants to save us, and has provided for our salvation, so we can be close to Him, not only now, but for eternity!

Isa 45:20 (NIV) "Gather together and come; assemble, you fugitives from the nations. Ignorant are those who carry about idols of wood, who pray to gods that cannot save.

1 John 4:10 (NIV) This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

So let us depend on Him, our caring, loving God Who not only cares about us, but is able to do fulfill our needs.

Heb 4:16 (NIV) Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Dear Lord, we thank You for being a caring God, One who is not just a distant power, but rather One who loves us and is there for us. May we really grasp this, and may we show you, in lives of service, our gratitude for this. In Jesus' name, amen.
