PC-USA 1997-05-04 - The Sabbath

Without becoming legalistic, I think sometimes we need a reminder to honor the Sabbath. It is for His glory and our good. Hope you all have a great Sabbath. : )

Exo 20:8-10 (NRSV) Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work. 10 But the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God; you shall not do any work--you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns.

Isa 58:13-14 (NRSV) If you refrain from trampling the sabbath, from pursuing your own interests on my holy day; if you call the sabbath a delight and the holy day of the LORD honorable; if you honor it, not going your own ways, serving your own interests, or pursuing your own affairs; 14 then you shall take delight in the LORD, and I will make you ride upon the heights of the earth; I will feed you with the heritage of your ancestor Jacob, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.

Mat 12:12 (NRSV) How much more valuable is a human being than a sheep! So it is lawful to do good on the sabbath."

Mark 2:27 (NRSV) Then he said to them, "The sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the sabbath;

Mat 12:5-8 (NRSV) Or have you not read in the law that on the sabbath the priests in the temple break the sabbath and yet are guiltless? 6 I tell you, something greater than the temple is here. 7 But if you had known what this means, 'I desire mercy and not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the guiltless. 8 For the Son of Man is lord of the sabbath."
