PC-USA 1997-06-15 - Fathers

Since today is Father's Day, I am sharing some verses about honoring fathers, and about being a godly father. For those of you who had painful relationships with your fathers, please remember that you have a loving Heavenly Father who cares for you and wants to heal any remaining pain, and be that father to you. Also, God sometimes provides fathers in the Christian family, to provide some of those missing needs:

1 Cor 4:15 (NRSV) For though you might have ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers. Indeed, in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel.

1 Th 2:10-12 (NCV) When we were with you, we lived in a holy and honest way, without fault. You know this is true, and so does God. 11 You know that we treated each of you as a father treats his own children. 12 We encouraged you, we urged you, and we insisted that you live good lives for God, who calls you to his glorious kingdom.

Other verses about fathers: Honoring Fathers:

Exo 20:12 (NIV) "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.

Prov 10:1 (NIV) The proverbs of Solomon: A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son grief to his mother.

Prov 17:25 (NIV) A foolish son brings grief to his father and bitterness to the one who bore him.

Prov 23:22 (NIV) Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.

Being a godly father:

Eph 6:4 (NRSV) And, fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Col 3:21 (NRSV) Fathers, do not provoke your children, or they may lose heart.

God as our Father:

2 Cor 6:18 (NRSV) and I will be your father, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty."

Gal 4:6 (NRSV) And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!"

Eph 2:18 (NRSV) for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father.

1 John 3:1 (NIV) How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
