1997-07-02 - Growing in Grace
2nd Peter 3:18 - But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen (KJV)
If you've ever planted a flower or vegetable garden, you know that the only way either of them can grow is if they are carefully nurtured. In order to have good flowers or good vegetables is to provide constant care: watering; weeding out other plants that would choke the plants you want to keep; and of course, plants need sunlight to grow healthy and strong.
So it is with we Christians. We are told to grow in grace and understanding of Jesus. It's not a suggestion, or even an option, we have marching orders from headquarters. Grow in grace and in knowledge. Period.
How do we do this? With constant care: by the watering of our spirits; by the weeding out of character traits that don't reflect His character and would choke out the traits that do; and of course, we need Sonlight in order to grow healthy and strong.
All of these nurturings come directly from daily reading of the Scriptures Psalms 119:11 - "Thy word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against Thee." (KJV) and continuous prayer Psalm 55:17 - Evening and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and He shall hear my voice. (KJV)
I Asked the Lord
I asked the Lord to comfort me When things weren't going my way.
I didn't ask for riches He gave me wealth untold
I thank the Lord for everything And I count my blessings each day He came to me when I needed Him I only had to pray. And He'll come to you if you ask Him to, He's only a prayer away.
My Father, I thank You that You have given me Your word to read and study. I thank You that You have given me a mind to understand the things that You say. I thank You that You always have time to hear me when I pray, but more importantly I thank You that in addition to listening to me, You care enough to answer me. Help me today to grow in You. Help me today to reflect Your character and Your love.
To our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ be glory both now and forever Amen.
