Calvary Chapel  1997-08-31 - Books

Books and other written records are very powerful things. They record historical events, map out areas, preserve culture in poetry and music, and many more important things. In doing so, they accurately maintain the record which our faulty minds modify as time passes. The Lord Himself uses books to record many things: His law to us, the number of days of our lives, our tears - which I find amazing, and the names of His children, among other things. Here are just a few of the references to books, named and unnamed, to ponder.

Exod 17:13-14 So Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword. 14 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Write this in a book as a memorial, and recite it to Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven." (NASB)

Num 21:13-16 From there they journeyed and camped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness that comes out of the border of the Amorites, for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites. 14 Therefore it is said in the Book of the Wars of the LORD, "Waheb in Suphah, and the wadis of the Arnon, 15 And the slope of the wadis that extends to the site of Ar, and leans to the border of Moab." 16 And from there they continued to Beer, that is the well where the LORD said to Moses, "Assemble the people, that I may give them water." (NAS)

Josh 10:13 So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, until the nation avenged themselves of their enemies. Is it not written in the book of Jashar? And the sun stopped in the middle of the sky, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day. (NAS)

2 Sam 1:17-18 Then David chanted with this lament over Saul and Jonathan his son, 18 and he told them to teach the sons of Judah the song of the bow; behold, it is written in the book of Jashar. (NAS)

Ps 56:8 Thou hast taken account of my wanderings; put my tears in Thy bottle; are they not in Thy book? (NAS)

Ps 139:15-16 My frame was not hidden from Thee, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth. 16 Thine eyes have seen my unformed substance; and in Thy book they were all written, the days that were ordained for me when as yet there was not one of them. (NAS)

Dan 12:1-2 1 "Now at that time Michael, the great prince who stands guard over the sons of your people, will arise. And there will be a time of distress such as never occurred since there was a nation until that time; and at that time your people, everyone who is found written in the book, will be rescued. 2 "And many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake, these to everlasting life, but the others to disgrace and everlasting contempt. (NAS)

Nahum 1:1 The oracle of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite. (NAS)

Mal 3:16-18 Then those who feared the LORD spoke to one another, and the LORD gave attention and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him for those who fear the LORD and who esteem His name. 17 "And they will be Mine," says the LORD of hosts, "on the day that I prepare My own possession, and I will spare them as a man spares his own son who serves him." 18 So you will again distinguish between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve Him. (NAS)

Rev 10:8-11 And the voice which I heard from heaven, I heard again speaking with me, and saying, "Go, take the book which is open in the hand of the angel who stands on the sea and on the land." 9 And I went to the angel, telling him to give me the little book. And he said to me, "Take it, and eat it; and it will make your stomach bitter, but in your mouth it will be sweet as honey." 10 And I took the little book out of the angel's hand and ate it, and it was in my mouth sweet as honey; and when I had eaten it, my stomach was made bitter. 11 And they said to me, "You must prophesy again concerning many peoples and nations and tongues and kings." (NAS)

Rev 20:12 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. (NAS)
