[Papercut Press Publishing] 1997-12-02 - Conviction Revisited

Prov. 11:30, “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who is wise wins souls.”

This is my favorite Bible verse and I thought I would share it with you since the topic today is one being revisited. I prefer the verse in the Gaelic Mens Study Bible for Men who are afraid of Lamps, Small Animals and Anything that looks like a Tricycle Version. I have quoted the NASB.

Do you know anyone who preaches with conviction? It is rare today. Well, this morning I was reading a sermon by John Bond (The first 007?), and he ended his sermon, preached March 27, 1644, with conviction that would shame almost any preacher alive today. The sermon was preached before the House of Commons, and ordered published by them. I bet few eyes that are living have ever seen this sermon, or one much like it. It is 60 pages long. Let me paint the picture a little. Here we have the Parliament of England, in their robes, and itchy wigs, standing for a sermon (Everyone stood in those days during the sermon), and Mr. 007 goes on in a monotone voice for 60 pages. My legs hurt just thinking about it. He ends with this (reproduced as best I can):

“To shut up all. Be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might; upon the eternal and infinite faith of the Trinity , and in the word of Iehovah, your losses for his sake shall be repaid. Will you take that word? Then there are two special promises which I will commend unto you. In the close of all; Oh that they were Written over the doors of the Houses of Parliament! Matt. 19.29. Every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sister , or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands (can you reckon up any thing else?) for my names sake, he shall receive an hundred fold; (God will pay him the very interest) and he shall inherit everlasting life (to boote.) Mark. 8.v.35. Whosoever will save his life shall lose it, but he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it. IF these places do deceive an active beleever at last; then let it be written upon my grave; HERE LYETH THAT MINISTER THAT WAS MISTAKEN IN HIS GOD AND GOSPELL. FINIS.”

Conviction that is rare today. “I am saying this, and if it is not true, write it on my grave for all to see.” Who says that today? Look for it, seek it, and if you find it, and the Bible shows it to be true, hold to it fast.

Soli Deo Gloria,
Tim
