1997-12-17 - Who Could Fill These Sandals, Part 3
Over the past two weeks we have examined some of the Old Testament prophecies and the New Testament fulfillments by Jesus Christ. All too often when teaching Bible studies, I hear people say, "let's just do the New Testament, the Old Testament is boring." My prayer is that this series has given you a glimpse of the Old Testament being the New Testament concealed and the New Testament being the Old Testament revealed. More importantly, I pray your faith and belief in Jesus, as mine has been, is strengthened by these passages. Some argue, "well Jesus had the Old Testament and manipulated His actions to seemingly fulfil many of the prophecies." So today, I want to look at some that could have only been fulfilled by the Hand of our Holy and Awesome God.
He is to be sold for 30 pieces of silver:
Zechariah 11:12 Then I said, "If you want to pay me, pay me. If not, then don't." So they paid me thirty pieces of silver.
His betrayal price would be given for a potter's field:
Zechariah 11:13 The LORD said to me, "Throw the money to the potter." That is how little they thought I was worth. So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them to the potter in the Temple of the LORD.
He would be nailed to a tree (cross).
Interestingly, death by crucifixion had not been invented at the time of this prophecy.
Deuteronomy 21:21-22;Then all the men in his town must throw stones at him until he dies. Get rid of the evil among you, because then all the people of Israel will hear about this and be afraid. If someone is guilty of a sin worthy of death, he must be put to death and his body displayed on a tree.
He is to be pierced:
Zechariah 12:10 "I will pour out on David's family and the people in Jerusalem a spirit of kindness and mercy. They will look at me, the one they have stabbed, and they will cry like someone crying over the death of an only child. They will be as sad as someone who has lost a firstborn son.
He is to be given gall and vinegar to eat and drink:
Psalm 69:21 They put poison in my food and gave me vinegar to drink.
Not one bone is to be broken:
Psalm 34:20 He will protect their very bones; not one of them will be broken.
He is to rise from the dead:
Psalm 16:10 because you will not leave me in the grave. You will not let your holy one rot.
He is to ascend into Heaven:
Psalm 68:18; When you went up to the heights, you led a parade of captives. You received gifts from the people, even from those who turned against you. And the LORD God will live there
Dear Father, it literally gives me chills down my spine reading and marveling at Your Word, Your Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ the Messiah, who fills the sandals that no other can fill. Jesus fills the void in our lives. Father, during this Christmas season, strengthen us in our Faith and our Belief. Father protect us, our families, and our children from the bombardment by the media that Christmas is about us giving to others. Keep us mindful that we should be giving ourselves completely to the One whose birthday we are celebrating. Fill us with Your Spirit and use us to be Your Light in this very dark world. In the precious name of the babe in the manager, our Savior on the Cross, Jesus Christ, Amen.
