2000-12-03 - Passages that Show that Jesus Fulfills
Prophecies about the Messiah
Today we will look at some passages from the new Testament, juxtaposed with
related Old Testament passages which prove Christ is the Messiah. All passages
are from the NASB.
Isaiah prophesied:
Isaiah 9:1-2 But there will be no more gloom for her who
was in anguish; in earlier times He treated the land of Zebulun and the land
of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He shall make it glorious, by the
way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles. The
people who walk in darkness Will see a great light; Those who live in a dark
land, The light will shine on them.
Zechariah said after seeing Christ:
Luke 2:29-32 Now Lord, You are releasing Your bond-servant
to depart in peace, According to Your word; For my eyes have seen Your salvation,
Which You have prepared in the presence of all peoples, A LIGHT OF REVELATION
TO THE GENTILES, And the glory of Your people Israel.

Isaiah also described the Virgin birth:
Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a
sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call
His name Immanuel.
Matthew 1:18-23 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows:
when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together
she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. And Joseph her husband,
being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her
away secretly. But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord
appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid
to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is
of the Holy Spirit. She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus,
for He will save His people from their sins.'' Now all this took place to
fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: "BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN
SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME
IMMANUEL,'' which translated means, "GOD WITH US.''

Micah 5:2 speaks of Jesus' birthplace:
But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Too little to be
among the clans of Judah, From you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in
Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, From the days of eternity
The fulfillment of this prophesy:
Matthew 2:2-6 "Where is He who has been born King of the
Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.'' When
Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. Gathering
together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of
them where the Messiah was to be born. They said to him, "" In Bethlehem
of Judea; for this is what has been written by the prophet: "AND YOU, BETHLEHEM,
LAND OF JUDAH, ARE BY NO MEANS LEAST AMONG THE LEADERS OF JUDAH; FOR OUT
OF YOU SHALL COME FORTH A RULER WHO WILL SHEPHERD MY PEOPLE ISRAEL.''

In addition, Micah 5:2 shows Jesus' deity:
But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Too little to be
among the clans of Judah, From you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in
Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, From the days of eternity.
Paul later affirms Christ's deity:
Philippians 2:5-6 Have this attitude in yourselves which
was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did
not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped.
