2001-08-03 - God Is Our Sovereign Creator
Christian Basics, Part 7
Some Christians believe that God created the Earth several thousand years
ago; others believe Creation occured 4.5 million years ago with God theAuthor
of the "Big Bang." Regardless of time frames, a basic, necessary Christian
belief is that God created the Earth and all that is in it, including mankind.
Genesis 1 (NASB) (Selected verses) 1 In the
beginning God created the heavens and the earth... 14-17 Then
God said, ""Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate
the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for
days and years; and let them be for lights in the expanse of the heavens
to give light on the earth''; and it was so. God made the two great lights,
the greater light to govern the day, and the lesser light to govern the night;
He made the stars also. God placed them in the expanse of the heavens to
give light on the earth...27 God created man in His own image,
in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
Some of our other basic Christian beliefs hinge on the Sovereignty of God
over His creation. Because God is our Sovereign Creator and controlled the
processes of life and death, He raised Christ from the dead -- and without
that resurrection, there would be no Christian faith today.
Because God is our Sovereign Creator, He was capable of causing our Savior
to be born to a Virgin.
Because God is our Sovereign Creator, He is able to bring to pass the Second
Coming of Christ, which will involve the melting of the elements that some
of us have studied in high school and college science classes.
2 Peter 3:9-11 (NASB) The Lord is not slow about His promise,
as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to
perish but for all to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come
like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements
will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be
burned up.
Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people
ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness.
We may be unable to explain all the "how" details of Creation, but we know
the "Who" responsible for the act.
