Since September 11, 2001, many of us have been fearful. Fearful of hijacked
airliners, fearful of anthrax and other once-forgotten diseases, fearful
of weapons owned by the terrorists. These are very understandable fears,
but God's word has a lot to say about whom and what we should or should not
fear. All passages are from the Revised Standard Version (RSV).
Deuteronomy 10:12 And now, Israel, what does the LORD
your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his
ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with
all your soul.
Psalm 111:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of
wisdom; a good understanding have all those who practice it. His praise endures
Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and of good courage. Do not
fear or be in dread of them: for it is the LORD your God who goes with you.
He will not fail you or forsake you
Isaiah 51:7 Hearken to me, you who know righteousness,
the people in whose heart is my law; fear not the reproach of men, and be
not dismayed at their revilings.
Matthew 10:25-26 it is enough for the disciple to be like
his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master
of the house Be-el'zebul, how much more will they malign those of his household.
So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered that will not be revealed,
or hidden that will not be known.
Luke 12:3-5 Therefore whatever you have said in the dark
shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms
shall be proclaimed upon the housetops. I tell you, my friends, do not fear
those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But
I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has power
to cast into hell; yes, I tell you, fear him!
1 Kings 17:12-14 And she said, "As the LORD your God lives,
I have nothing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in
a cruse; and now, I am gathering a couple of sticks, that I may go in and
prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die." And Eli'jah
said to her, "Fear not; go and do as you have said; but first make me a little
cake of it and bring it to me, and afterward make for yourself and your son.
For thus says the LORD the God of Israel, 'The jar of meal shall not be spent,
and the cruse of oil shall not fail, until the day that the LORD sends rain
upon the earth.'"
2 Kings 17:35 The LORD made a covenant with them, and
commanded them, "You shall not fear other gods or bow yourselves to them
or serve them or sacrifice to them."
Psalm 23:4 Even though I walk through the valley of the
shadow of death, I fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff,
they comfort me.
Psalm 46:1-3 To the choirmaster. A Psalm of the Sons of
Korah. According to Alamoth. A Song. God is our refuge and strength, a very
present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth should
change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters
roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult. [Selah]
