Part 6 - Based on The Apostle's Creed
"....who was conceived by the Holy Spirit..."
Luke 1:26-35 In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you." 29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. 31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end." 34 "How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?" 35 The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.
The last two sentences of the above passage are the bottom line. For if Jesus is "Just a man" and not God - then His sacrifice for us is no better than those of a human priest - and as Hebrews reminds us, human priests are sinful like the rest of us - thus the continual need for sacrifices under the Old Covenant. But because Christ is God's Son - sired by the Holy Spirit Himself - that makes Him the only possible perfect sacrifice that was able to buy our salvation.
This passage is the basis for our belief in the Virgin Birth - which is a cornerstone "basic" of the Christian faith. Don't fault yourself if you don't understand; a full comprehension is beyond our human ability. And in fact - Mary's husband Joseph didn't understand at first, either. Instead, he thought Mary had been promiscuous. But through a dream God revealed the truth to Him; Mary hadn't committed a sexual sin. Jesus didn't have a natural human father. Christ has been called the God Man - because while his mother was a regular human being like the rest of us, He was conceived not by a human - but by the Holy Spirit. So that's the origin of the basic belief of the Holy Spirit's conception of Christ.
