2007-06-28 - Masturbation

Author's Note: This devotional is another on in the lust series and deals with issues that may be inappropriate for young children.

Is sexual self-gratification, or masturbation, a sin? That is a question I have been asked several times and I've never really liked the answer I have given in the past. Usually I say that the bible doesn't specifically address it but that masturbation usually accompanies lustful thoughts and activities such as viewing porn and fantasizing about someone so it is a symptom of sin.

But this past week I had what I guess would be an epiphany. Time and time again the bible is clear that sex with anyone other than your spouse is a sin. Masturbation is sex with yourself. You are not your spouse. Therefore, masturbation is a sin. It falls under the categories of adultery and fornication.

Exodus 20:14 - Thou shalt not commit adultery.
Jeremiah 3:8-9 And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also. 9 And it came to pass through the lightness of her whoredom, that she defiled the land, and committed adultery with stones and with stocks.

Thinking of it this way I believe it is very clear whether it is a sin or not. Cheating on your spouse is so big a deal that it is often used in the Old Testament as an analogy for cheating on God by worshipping false idols. Repeatedly the prophets spoke of Israel as an unfaithful wife who had prostituted itself with other gods. That's pretty serious. Infidelity is serious. Masturbating is serious.

Proverbs 6:32 - But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.

Masturbation is self worship. You are putting yourself above your spouse and above God. It is a sin. I fervently hope that if this is a trap you have fallen into that you will ask God for forgiveness and ask him for strength to climb out of this hole of darkness.

There is hope in Christ.
