[CF Devotionals] 2008-11-08 - Living 24:7

Principle 3

Deuteronomy 24:7 - If a man is found kidnapping any of his brethren of the children of Israel, and mistreats him or sells him, then that kidnapper shall die; and you shall put away the evil person from among you.

Wow! That sounds very harsh doesn't it? Capital punishment is a controversial subject these days but for the Jews of the Old Testament many sins required the guilty party to be taken out and killed. The Law is full of stuff like this: if someone does this or that, you don't let them in the temple; if someone commits this sin or that, kill them; and if they do something else, kick them out of the city. All these laws have the same underlying principle - a principle that we need to live by. We must get rid of evil among you. In other words, get serious about sin.

Too often we make fun of sin with comments like "you'll burn in hell for that one" or "oh well no one's perfect". We need to repent of these attitudes and excuses and learn to view sin as God does. God takes sin so seriously that he will have nothing to do it. It must be removed from his presence. He was so serious about sin that he was willing to sacrifice his own son to remove it from us. The next time you tell a little white lie imagine the stripes upon our Savior's back that it took to erase the damage of that little white lie. The next time you sin and think it's into hurting anyone just remember that it was this very sin that cost Jesus his life. It may not hurt you but it cost Jesus his very life.

Quit making excuses for it just admit it and move past it. I have hear it said that we should "confess your sins - not your neighbor's".

We will never be sinless but we should try to sin less.

Until next time...
