[CF Devotionals] 2009-04-27 - Talking to God

Matthew 6:5-15

If you have ever wondered if there's a right way to pray, you are in great company. Even the 12 disciples were unsure until Jesus advised them:

  • Check your motive for praying. Is it sincere? Prayer isn't like a popularity contest.

The idea is not to impress people, but to develop a personal relationship with God. He wants to connect with you. Take time to find a place that is quiet and not distracting.

But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. (Matthew 6:6 NIV)

  • God is not keeping a record of the number of words you use, so there is no need to be lofty. Just tell God what is on your mind, for He knows what your needs are anyway.
And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. (Matthew 6:7)

  • During prayer, it is helpful to give glory to God's name. By honoring Him, you are showing God that He has value in your life. When you ask for God's will be to done, you demonstrate your belief in His mighty power. Your wants and desires become secondary.

  • Unforgiveness is a prayer blocker. Ask God to forgive any sins, as you forgive people who have hurt you. It is also wise to ask God to deliver you from temptation that is bound to find you. (See Matthew 6:9-14) As you pray, just remember to trust that God will take notice.

Lord, I honor Your holy name. Let Your kingdom come now, and may Your will be done on Earth, as Your will reigns in Heaven. Thanks for making sure I have enough to eat, and that other needs are met. Forgive my sins as I forgive those who have sinned against me. Don't let me be tempted to do wrong, and deliver me from listening to Satan's lies. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
