2009-05-11 - Neighborhood Mom
Mark 15:21, Romans 16:13
Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord, and his mother, who has been a mother to me, too. Romans 16:13
Rufus' mom is the kind I would like to be. I picture her as the coolest mother in the neighborhood. She is up-to-date on the latest trends, has a stocked pantry and cookie jar, and is always welcoming and interested in her child's life and those of her friends.
All we know about Rufus' mother is how Paul felt about her. He saw her as a parental figure, a second mom. She must have given him a listening ear, been an advisor, and a trustworthy support system at a time when Paul was faced with much opposition.
It is believed that Rufus' father was Simon, the man forced to carry Jesus' cross on the road to the crucifixion. Imagine Paul hearing a family account of Jesus' walk to Calvary.
Rufus' mom was someone Paul could confide in. As a mother figure, there was a bond, an admiration between the two.
Lord, May I be a comfort to someone in need. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
