2009-08-31 - Insights from Pontius Pilate's Wife
Love and Marriage Bible Style
While Pilate was sitting on the judge's seat, his wife sent him this message: "Don't have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream, because of him." (Matthew 27:19 NIV)
As governor, Pontius had a powerful and stressful job, and for an instant, his wife hesitated about sending word to Pontius at work. The magnitude of the situation required immediate action. She told him to have nothing to do with Jesus, for she had a disturbing dream regarding Him.
By sending the note, Pontius' wife wasn't trying to take control. She had no personal agenda against the government; her main concern was for her husband. Pontius must have agreed with her, for he washed his hands of the situation, figuratively and literally.
Pontius realized that changing the crowds' and religious leaders' minds concerning Jesus' fate was a lost cause. The best answer would have been to release Jesus, not the convicted murderer Barabbas. There comes a time when you have to give a situation to God. This was one of those times.
Lord, when I am in the mist of a frustrating situation, help me to do all I can, and then trust that You will take over. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
