[CF Devotionals] 2010-08-17 - Eyes on the Music

I was playing the piano recently at our church, while our regular pianist was out of town. The morning service was a breeze, but there was a little glitch during the evening. I was playing a five-page prelude, and just for one brief second, I took my eyes off the music. Mistake! I lost my place, and had to play from memory, until I rediscovered my place in the music. The transition wasn’t exactly “smooth as silk,” and I was quite annoyed at myself.

But it was a valuable reminder - not to take my eyes off the music while I’m playing. Isn’t that just how it is in our Christian walk? Sometimes, just like Simon Peter (Matthew 14:28-31), we take our focus off Christ, and we can become overwhelmed and start sinking - into a morass of anxiety, pain, indecision, confusion, or whatever is on our hearts. If we learn to refocus onto Christ, who wants us to cast our cares on Him (1 Peter 5:7), we can deal with anything that’s happening in our lives – one step at a time.

If there’s something that is keeping you awake for hours, something you simply can’t stop thinking about, something that may have even taken over your life – I encourage you to ask God to help you return your eyes to Christ, and ask for God's guidance for what step(s) to take, as well provision of a counselor if needed - and the peace that He promises us, the peace that “… surpasses all comprehension” (Philippians 4:7, NASB).
