2011-02-26 - Jonah
The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: "Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me." But Jonah ran away from the Lord . (Jonah 1:1-3 NIV)
Today, we will look at the reluctant prophet, Jonah, who tried to run away from God. Jonah didn't want to follow God's call. Jonah wouldn't go to the capital city of Assyria. These Assyrians were the enemies of the Israel and God wanted Jonah to go preach repentance to them. Jonah just wouldn't do it. He got on a ship and fled in the other direction. God sent a great storm and a giant whale to convince Jonah otherwise. And, reluctantly, Jonah eventually went and preached to the Ninevites. Surprisingly, the inhabitants of Niveveh repented.
What is God calling you to do today? What are you reluctant to do? Is it to teach a Sunday school class, sing in the choir, or witness to the lost? How will you respond to God's call? Will you run away like Jonah? Or will you trust in God's call and rely on His guidance to follow His beckoning?
