2011-07-16 - The Call of the Disciples
Peter, Andrew, James and John
Just after he had endured the temptation by the devil, Jesus began his public ministry. He went to Capernaum, which is by the Sea of Galilee. Jesus was walking by the Sea when he came upon two groups of fishermen. The first pair was Simon, who was called Peter, and Andrew, his brother. They were busy fishing, by casting their nets into the sea. Jesus said, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." (Matthew 4:19)
They immediately left their nets and followed Jesus. Similarly, James and John, sons of Zebedee were in a boat mending their fishing nets. Jesus called them, and they also left immediately to follow Jesus.
Today, Jesus is calling us to follow Him. How do we hear Him summon us? Through the Scriptures, preaching, and sound counsel, the Holy Spirit guides us to listen and hear and obey. Like the early disciples, Jesus is calling us to leave everything behind to follow Him, and become much more than we can be on our own. Are you following Jesus?
