2011-08-01 - What Would Jonathan Say?
Jonathan said to David, "Whatever you want me to do, I'll do for you." 1 Samuel 20:4
I'd never seen David so agitated before, and if what he says is true, then it is for a good reason. David is making a huge accusation against my father. I am without question David's faithful friend, but I still need to honor my dad. Until now, I saw my dad as a sounding board and confidant - not as a murderer.
David had a plan to reveal if my father's trying to kill him. I was behind David and wanted to help him expose the truth. David was scheduled to eat with Dad tomorrow. Instead, David would hide out while I ascertained my father's attitude toward David. If my father wanted to harm him, God strike me dead if I don't get word back to David in time.
To my horror David was right; his life is on the line and so was mine. Saul, my own father even tried to kill me!
It wasn't fair. David had to go on the run to save his life. Before David left for safety, I asked God to watch over him. David and I made a solemn vow that our friendship remains loyal. I wasn't ready, but needed to be realistic, this may be the last time I would see my best friend. In case I died first, David promised to demonstrate the love and kindness of God to my children. That vow of friendship was all I had to cling on to.
Lord, Help me on the road to healthy friendships. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
Have you ever had to choose between a friend and a family member?
