2011-11-05 - Patience ~ David
After David was anointed King of Israel by the prophet Samuel, God made a promise to David. God promised that He would make David's name great, that He would subdue David's enemies, and that He would establish David's name forever. David then went on to achieve numerous victories over Israel's foes.In 2 Samuel 8:15, we are told that "David reigned over all Israel, doing what was just and right for all his people." (NIV)
David was on a roll. Things were going his way. David sent his army out for the spring campaign against Israel's enemies. He was so confident that he didn't even go with his army. Then David faced a temptation. While walking on the roof of his house, David saw a woman bathing, and he sent an official to find out about her. David was told that she was married to one of his soldiers. David then failed to exercise good judgement and patience. He let his sinful desires have control over him. David sent for the woman, Bathsheba, and had an affair with her.
The effects of David's impatience to temptation multiplied. Bathsheba became pregnant. David eventually arranged to have her husband, Uriah, killed in a military action. The child born to Bathsheba and David died. God was angry with David and rebuked him. David acknowledged his sin and repented.
What can we learn from this story? We face numerous temptations in life every day. We are tempted to lie, cheat, and steal. When we encounter these situations, we need to exercise patience. We need to take time to think of the consequences of our actions. We need to be patient and ask for God's guidance and help. We should pray for patience.
