[CF Devotionals] 2012-02-09 - Since You Know

Job 38:1-7
  1. Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said,
  2. “Who is this that darkens counsel By words without knowledge?
  3. “Now gird up your loins like a man, And I will ask you, and you instruct Me!
  4. “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding,
  5. Who set its measurements? Since you know. Or who stretched the line on it?
  6. “On what were its bases sunk? Or who laid its cornerstone,
  7. When the morning stars sang together And all the sons of God shouted for joy?

Have you ever been involved in a conversation where someone was speaking on something authoritatively, and you knew they were way off base? It is one thing to wonder aloud if something is so and wander way off into the weeds in the process of put the pieces of an idea together. This is an honest error or misunderstanding. In those circumstances most people are willing to admit that they are open to other thoughts on the subject.

Imagine the Apostle John listening to the gnostics ramble on about what they thought they knew. He was the last living eyewitness of Jesus Christ and His teachings. How his blood may have raged as these men who had put their theology together and spread their herasy abroad tickling the ears of those who would listen. The gnostics led many astray of the truth of Christ's divinity and more. John had been taught the truth by the Messiah and countered within what we know today as the gospel of John - his letter to the churches.

In Job 38 we get a taste of how God feels about those who speak about things they can not possibly know with certainty. The stinging rebuke in verse three to the presumption we mortals can be caught in is staggering. Please take the time to read the chapter. Today the big bang and evolution are taught as established fact. They are theories that seem to fit the facts. Only God was there at the beginning. I am not against those who want to know when and how. The desire to know is placed into humanity by their Creator. Piece by piece supporting evidence is gathered for these theorectical positions. Others gather pieces in defence of creation piece by piece. The math and theoretical physics of the big bang are interesting to say the least, at least to some of us. Was this the response to, "Let there be light?"

There are still unanswered questions and chaukboards are filled with amazing equations as we speak as very intelligent men and women wrestle with these puzzles. There are some who search for the answers without regard for whether there is intelligence in the equations. There are those who find such elegant order and purpose in those equations most of us can only begin to fathom that they draw the conclusion that there must be intelligence behind that order. There are others who actively dismiss God without being able to explain the source of the big bang.

But I hear others who believe and say - I can't believe in a God Who would [insert questioned idea here]. When this position is backed by solid theology we stand on solid rock. It is also possible to find ourselves on very loose and shifting sand here along with the gnostics when we allow our experience and feelings to trump the truth we have been given. God ordered Israel to slay all the inhabitants of the promised land. This can seem very contrary to other aspects of God as we understand Him.

Isaiah 55:8-9 For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, says the Lord. 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts. (AMP)

Be willing to humbly review the foundation of a position. We must be very careful to say we know the mind of God or we ask to stand in the same place as Job's friends who decided that Job had some hidden sin in his life and that God was judging Job. They too were working with theories that seemed to fit the facts.

Selah.

Lord - give us wisdom and humility to carefully sift the chaffe from our understanding. Amen.

Grace & Peace,
Mike
