[CF Devotionals] 2012-02-10 - Something to Believe In

As I drove to church last night I was listening to one of my favorite religious XM stations - Hair Nation. OK so maybe that isn't a gospel station but nevertheless that was what my radio was on. One of my favorite bands from the big hair era came on with a ballad and I found myself remembering all the words and singing along. The song was "Something to Believe In" by Poison. As I sang the words I began to think of the truth contained in its lyrics. We all need something to believe in.

And in deed we all do believe in something. Jews believe in the god of their forefathers - Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Muslims believe in a god that is somewhat like the Jewish god. Christians believe in God who revealed himself through Jesus. Atheists believe there is no god but that is a belief system. One preacher once argued that they even have their own religious holiday - April Fool's. Agnostics believe that it doesn't matter if there's a god or not. Buddhists and Hindi also believe in certain things. Why do we all feel the need to believe in something?

I believe it's because God created us to believe in Him. When we fell from grace and become a broken image of him we lost that belief. But the belief hole is still there and we desperately try to fill it. God still makes us all to believe in something. All of creation testifies to him and yet somehow we still miss him and so he allows us to believe in something else to fall for fake beliefs.

2 Thessalonians 2:11-12 (NASB) - For this reason God will send upon them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false, in order that they all may be judged who did not believe the truth, but took pleasure in wickedness.

Believe in God if you can. Believe in God if you have thought it over and absolutely must because nothing else makes sense. That is a good thing because it means you are one who God won't let go of. Believe in anything else if you choose. But recognize that we all believe in something.

And if you know Bret tell him thanks for writing a little truth in his cool song!
