2012-05-21 - What Would Peter Say?
The voice spoke to him a second time, Do not call anything impure that God has made clean. (Acts 10:15)
Gurgle. Gurgle. I was praying although I found it hard to concentrate; my hunger pangs were distracting me. While waiting to eat, I fell into a trance and saw a large sheet coming down from Heaven. The sheet had all kinds of animals, birds, and reptiles. Then I heard a voice telling me to kill and eat. I knew I was hungry, but not hungry enough to eat anything that was impure and unclean. God reprimanded me and told me never to call anything He has made impure or unclean. God spoke three more times, and then the vision of the sheet disappeared.
I never experienced anything like that! I wondered what it all meant. God brought about the answer in the form of two visitors looking for me. God gave me His approval for going back with these men, to meet a man named Cornelius.
When I got to Cornelius', there were a bunch of people waiting for me. It was against the law to associate with Gentiles, but then I remembered the sheet and understood what God was showing me: it was okay to associate with people who wanted to know about God, even though they may be different. If I let human tradition be my guide, these people would never have experienced the Spirit of God in their lives.
Who was I to limit God? Even though I was one of Jesus disciples, even though I healed people and taught about God, I wasnt above God teaching me. There was still so much to learn.
Lord, All I have is You. I want to know more about You and the Bible. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
