"Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer." Romans 12:12 (NIV)
Paul puts a lot in one little verse. First, we are to be joyful in hope. Our hope is in God's love, revealed to us by the Holy Spirit. Jesus died for our sins, to give us the hope of eternal life.
Second, we are to be patient in affliction. Jesus told us in John 16:33 that "in this world you will have trouble." Life is not easy, and we face new problems every day. But Jesus also told us in that same verse that "I have overcome the world." We have the assurance that His love will help us face our afflictions.
Finally, we are to be faithful in prayer. We aren't to pray just in our difficult times, but also when things are going well. Prayer is our way of communicating with God. In fact, Paul tells us in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 to "pray continually." So Paul tells us to have hope, to be patient, and to remain faithful. Let us strive to live up to these ideals.
