2012-11-12 - What Would Mahlah Say?
Why should our father's name disappear from his clan, because he had no son? Give us property among our father's relatives.(Numbers 27:4)
My sisters and I were not going to let our dad die without dignity. Why should he or us, his daughters be penalized because he didn't have any sons? We wanted a portion of our birthright. Our way of thinking is not out of line. I and my sisters are not the first family in this situation, but we could not sit idly by and have society dictate our future. Something had to be done about the abominable law. The law states that daughters are not allowed to inherit their deceased father's land. We stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, leaders, and the congregation and presented our predicament.
I admit it was a little intimidating, standing in front of these people, but it was not a time to be timid or afraid. Our livelihood depended upon our courage.
Moses went to ask God what should be done. God spoke to Moses and said we should have a part of our father Zelophehad's inheritance, and set a precedent for other daughters in similar situations. Our father would be proud.
Lord, Thank You for the new life and meaningful existence You granted me. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
