[CF Devotionals] 2012-12-22 - The Shepherds

Luke 2:15-16 When the angels had left them and gone into Heaven, the shepherds said to one another, 'Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.' So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. (NIV)

The angels surprised the shepherds in the middle of the night, while they were out in the fields with their flocks of sheep. The shepherds had to be attentive - to guard against predators and wandering sheep. They were probably struggling to stay awake. Shepherds were at the low end of society. Few people associated with these men who spent their time out in the fields with their smelly animals. And yet God chose to send His angels to these men, to proclaim the good news of the Messiah's birth. What did these shepherds do after the miraculous announcement? They "hurried off" to Bethlehem, to see what the angels had proclaimed. What do we do with the Good News that God sends to us today? Do we stop everything we are doing, and consider what God has done for us? Or do we wait for a better time? Do we say, "Maybe later?" The angel's announcement, over 2000 years ago, is as relevant to us today. The Messiah has arrived. Will you allow Him into your life today?
