2013-03-16 - Following Jesus
"They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, and the disciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid. Again he took the Twelve aside and told them what was going to happen to him." --Mark 10:32 (NIV)
Jesus headed towards Jerusalem, knowing what was ahead of Him. Along the way, he performed many miracles of healing. There are several stories of the blind receiving back their sight. Jesus taught the masses with parables, and many followed Him. Our verse tells us that "the disciples were astonished." They had been with Jesus for several years now, and had seen Him perform many miracles and teach the crowds.
Yet Mark says that they were "astonished." And the verse also explains that "those who followed were afraid." Of what were they afraid? Jesus had just explained to the rich, young ruler that he should sell all that he owned and follow Jesus. The cost of following Jesus was to deny themselves and take up their crosses daily and follow Him. (Luke 9:23) Perhaps they were afraid of the cost. Were they willing to give up everything to follow Jesus? Are we willing to give up everything today - and follow Him?
