2013-06-26 - What Would Abednego Say?
At the end of the ten days, Daniel and his three friends looked healthier and better nourished than the young men who had been eating the food assigned by the king. (Daniel 1:15)
It is understandable why King Nebuchadnezzar did not like Daniel's proposal. Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and I, Abednego, were brought into the palace to serve King Nebuchadnezzar. We were offered the best food from the royal kitchen, and we turned it down for a diet of vegetables and water. We could not eat food from the king's table in good conscience, as it had been dedicated to idols first.
The king's official was concerned we men would become pale and thin, if we did not eat from the assigned menu, not to mention he could be beheaded for not taking care of us properly. So a compromise was made. We would have vegetables and water for ten days. At the end of the trial period, if we looked healthy, then the diet could continue. Guess what? We looked healthier and better nourished than the other men, who had eaten the king's rich food.
Even though we went against the king's wishes and didn't eat his assigned food, King Nebuchadnezzar added us to his staff of advisors. God rewarded our faithfulness - and blessed us with knowledge, skill, and influence over the king.
Lord, Please show me the best way to handle situations in my life. I want to take a stand in my faith. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
