[CF Devotionals] 2013-07-11 - An Amazing Heart

Eph 5:20 always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father;

I have met this person a number of times, but to say that I know him would be very presumptuous. He is a highly skilled martial artist. He owns his own school. He was the guest instructor tonight at the martial arts school I attend. We learned tonight that he is also a boxer, which is very different than the karate that we teach and learn. Let's call him Mr A.

Mr. A led a very different warmup and stretch at the beginning. He then gave us several points in boxing step-by-step and then gave us drills to work on those skills. Then, since the class this night was a sparing class, we rotated through every paring of people possible. During the entire class time, and every time I have met Mr. A he has been nothing but positive and encouraging. It would be easy to think that he has everything going for him and that would make him so happy.

As the class was winding down he shared some almost surreal things about his early life. He lived on the street from the time he was five years old in a rough city. At age ten he moved to an east coast beach city where he lived under the boardwalk. As hard as I might try to imagine that existence to understand what he went through I would fail.

And yet he never scowled, complained or whimpered. He gave me a hug and a pat on the back and blessed me as he was getting ready to leave. He humbled me. The Lord used him to reset my compass several degrees. What would my reaction be to that early life? I look back and am more grateful for the people and places that have been a part of my path.

For those of us who have never know this kind of privation and complained about this or that, we need to grasp that, but for the grace of God, it would have been us under that boardwalk and be thankful. When something bothers us remember that complaining never fixed anything. The Father saw something that needed to be fixed, and He gave His Son to fix it. What would we give?

Selah.

Lord Jesus - thank You for the heart lesson tonight. Let my ears, eyes and heart be more open to the people You send through my life and the lessons you have for my heart and mind that I might reach others with Your grace. Amen.

Grace & Peace,
Mike
