[CF Devotionals] 2013-11-28 - Thanksgiving Hope

Thanksgiving Day 2013

1 Cor 15:54 But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, “Death is swallowed up in victory.

I read a bumper sticker today - Even poor Christians knowing Christ have everything they need.

Paul and Silas sang songs of praise at midnight in jail. Paul was stoned and left for dead. Then he got up and walked back into town to proclaim the gospel to those who had stoned him. John was sent to the prison quarry on the Island of Patmos already in very old. He continued to tell his fellow inmates and the guards about Jesus and His salvation.

What makes people do things like this? A sure hope, hoping that something happens soon, not hoping that it happens at all is what gives people the strength do what on the surface seems illogical, or beyond human. Paul and Silas were honored to suffer for the gospel, in a small way as their Lord had suffered. Paul was counseling experienced sailors during a storm the sailors were all sure would destroy the ship and drown them all. Paul knew the Lord had more work for the Apostle to do.

Two millennia later Christians take comfort even when storms surround them that God has not deserted them. When we do not feel His presence we can be confident that He is here. We know He hears our prayers and petitions. We are certain of life after leaving this life with God for eternity.

Heb 6:19-20 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil, 20 where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

The love of God, family and friends today should be counted most highly among things for which to be thankful.

A blessed Thanksgiving to everyone.

And This is Love

And this is Love, not that I have first loved You
And this is Love, that You have first loved me
And You give up Your life
One perfect sacrifice
And this is Love, that You have first loved me

(verse)

You did not wait for me to make myself a worthy man
You did not wait for me to make a good and righteous stand
There was nothing I could do
In sin I had died
But Your love conquered death and brought me to Your side

And this is Love, not that I have first loved You
And this is Love, that You have first loved me
And You give up Your life
One perfect sacrifice
And this is Love, that You have first loved me
