[CF Devotionals] 2013-12-03 - What Would a Rich Man Say?

- - - - - - -

Matthew 19:16-26

Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” (Matthew 19:21 NIV)

Recently I was given the opportunity to ask Jesus a question. I asked how to gain eternal life. Jesus said that a person needed to keep God’s commandments. That was easy. I did that already. Jesus advised me to sell everything I owned and give the proceeds to the poor and then to follow Him.

When I heard Jesus’ answer I sadly left for I couldn’t possibly give away all my possessions. I am a wealthy man after all. How would I survive? Not to mention my family, they depend on my money, they are accustomed to certain things, as I am.

How can Jesus expect me to change my life for Him? He may be able to live without wealth and certain possessions, but not me. If ever I want or need something I always get it. That’s what money is for, isn't it?

Lord, Give me the confidence I am lacking. I look to You as my security. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Could you sell everything to follow Jesus?
