[CF Devotionals] 2014-01-29 - Loopholes

- - - - - -

As defined by dictionary.com, loopholes are “a means of escape or evasion, a means or opportunity of evading a rule, law, etc.” Most people don’t look for a way out of doing the right thing, especially if they have a conscience, yet there are times when it’s acceptable and even overlooked. For those of us with a conscience, it is very sad when others look for a way to avoid doing what is right.

Last year around Thanksgiving, we had a new roof put on our house. The only thing required of us, due to the wind damage sustained by several storms - but lastly one specific storm the summer before, was to pay the standard deductible required by our homeowner’s insurance company. We were blessed to have the money available to take care of that fee, and were grateful to be able to take care of the home we have been given. As the job progressed, there were problems, and while it was nothing major, we were disappointed by the lack of professionalism and integrity in finishing the job. We asked the appropriate questions, had no further damage than some missing shingles, made calls to check the company’s reputation and legitimacy, and it seemed like a pretty routine job. While they were working, I specifically asked if they pulled shingles off the back porch, or if they put some on top of the existing shingles, and I was told they changed them out. After completion, we noted leakage onto our back porch thorough the roof area - and even more recently, we now have noted some water stains just inside the wall area, next to that same roof area we asked about while the job was still in progress. They insisted they did the job that they were contracted to do, and were not legally required to do any more to stop the leakage, although nothing on our roof leaked “at all” before they reshingled the roof. Short of taking them to court, there is really nothing we can do, due to some loopholes in the warranty they had, to go along with the work. What an unfortunate mistake on our part.

I am so relieved that God did not choose to provide any loopholes in his promises to us, when we choose to accept and follow him with our whole heart. He stands by his promises, and there is not a limited warranty that includes the idea of him deciding whether or not each individual issue applies to his overall decision. Even when we make mistakes, he doesn’t squelch on his promises. He says we are with him eternally - and that’s it!

“Not one of all the Lord’s good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.” (Joshua 21:45)

“For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jews on behalf of God’s truth, so that the promises made to the patriarchs might be confirmed.”(Romans 15:8)

“Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.” (2 Peter 1:4)

“I will listen to what God the Lord says; he promises peace to his people, his faithful servants— but let them not turn to folly.” (Ps 85:8)

“Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations. The Lord is trustworthy in all he promises and faithful in all he does.” (Ps 145:13)
