2014-02-01 - Second Chances
John 13:38 (NIV) Jesus answered, "Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times."
Peter was one of the Disciples in Jesus' inner circle. Along with James and John, Peter was present at special times in Jesus' ministry. When Jesus told the Disciples that He was going away, Peter asked to follow, and offered to lay down his life for Jesus. Today's verse, John 13:38, contains Jesus' reply to Peter. Jesus told Peter that not only would Peter not lay down his life, but that he would deny Jesus.
When Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane, Peter acted boldly and drew his dagger. Peter struck a servant of the high priest, severing the man's ear. Peter followed Jesus to the home of the high priest, where Jesus was questioned. Three times Peter was asked about his affiliation with Jesus. Each time, Peter denied knowing Jesus. The rooster then crowed, and Peter was distraught and wept bitterly.
Peter had let down Jesus by denying Him. Peter was not alone. Frequently we disappoint Jesus by our sinful actions. Sometimes we fail by remaining silent. Other times we just walk away.
After His resurrection, Jesus sought Peter out, forgave him and restored him. Peter took advantage of his second chance to become one of the great leaders of the early Christian church. Peter was a dynamic Apostle of the Gospel. Today, Jesus seeks us out, forgives us of our sins, and restores us to a right relationship with Him. What will we do with our second chance?
