Purity ~ Part 1
Often I write devotionals based on my messages. Sermons are usually spoken word and lend themselves very well, but this past Wednesday my message was quite visual, so it makes it difficult, but I am going to try because it is a subject that needs to be discussed with kids, teens, young adults throughout the world. The subject is purity. I dont know how well this will work, so it may be an epic failure, but my prayer is that it will help parents and leaders who work with youth and young adults to explain purity in a meaningful way.
1 Thessalonians 4:3 (NASB) - For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality
Psalm 24:3-4 (NASB)
The first visual was the word SEX. I put it up with the just a shadow showing to the right and bottom by putting white letters on black background then almost completely covering the white letters with black shifted just a few pixels over and up.
I asked for people to raise their hands if they could read it. A few students shouted it out. I congratulated them, and then began speaking, with all eyes and ears on me. Nothing like a good attention grabber.
Today I want to talk about SEX. First thing I want to tell you is SEX IS GOOD!
Second visual had the black letters now in gray making them easier to read and IS GOOD in bold letters below it.
In fact, sex is really good. [Lots of giggles and looks, especially since my son was in the room, too.] But I dont mean it like that; it is good, because it is part of Gods plan. God is good; his plans are good. Therefore, sex is good.
Genesis 1:27-28 (NASB) God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 God blessed them; and God said to them, Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.
Genesis 2:22,24-25 (NASB)
God created people. He created animals. I trust this is not your first birds and bees, talk so I wont be detailed, but I think you all know what I mean that God designed things to fit together and work together. He also commanded mankind to make babies, so he made the process good. He made them, and they ran around naked without shame. It was all good. God even said it was good.
Sex is really good, so why would God want to keep you from something so good? After all, he created it right? Im no Sherlock Holmes, but it seems he made us to have sex and commanded us to reproduce, which requires us to have, it so what gives?
Sex is a good thing. Growing up, the few times I heard from my parents and teachers on it, was that it was something dirty and horrible, but that is not the truth. I only heard verses like the first couple that I mentioned, that talk about sin and purity. But it is part of Gods plan from day six of creation - way before sin ever entered the picture. Gods design for sex is great. The worlds distortion is bad. Sex is good, but sin is bad.
Until next time...
