[CF Devotionals]2014-07-03 - Equality Set Aside

- - - - - - -

Phil 2:6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,

The footnotes in my Bible clarify the word 'grasped' as utilized or asserted.

The authors are explaining one of the points of character in Jesus. He willingly set aside or veiled His power and authority to come and take on humanity. One equal with the Father chose not to assert His equality with the Father to redeem their fallen creation.

Does this seem so impossible? We can frame the concept in human terms where a parent will take terrible risks for their children, or spouses or dear friends will go a difficult extra mile for their loved ones. This gives us a general frame of reference. But when we try to wrap our minds around the idea of moving from never having known privation of any form - never being hungry or sleepy, or physically hurt to put on our mortal flesh. Add to that doing so knowing that the mission is to suffer physical abuse, betrayal, and a cruel death at the hands of the ones He came to save from eternal punishment. Then the distance traveled is truly beyond our understanding.

The Lord decided maintaining His station was something He was willing to set aside for a time. The thought that God the Son would humble Himself to that level for me it leaves me speechless.

Any yet we are implored to emulate this "attitude" (v5) that was in Christ Jesus. The Creator thought of His creation was worth all of the things He walked through to show us the love of the Father, and reopen the path the Heaven. Love those who curse you and say all manner of things against you falsely for His sake (Matt 5:11).

Can we love the people around us who are unlovable? Jesus loved us when we were still His enemies.

Lord Jesus, Help us to see others around us through Your eyes and heart when they are difficult. Let us be Your hands and feet to them. Amen

Grace & Peace,
Mike
