2014-08-04 - What Would a Job's Wife Say?
"His wife said to him, 'Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die!'" (Job 2:9)
Without warning, Job and I suffered three major catastrophes that would set life into a tailspin. We just lost our livestock and staff, due to lighting and raiders. Our ten children were killed by a tornado, and then Job developed painful sores all over his body. I asked my husband why he was still acting honorably. In my estimation, he should curse God and die. Job thought my remarks were foolish, and told me how wrong it was only to take the good and not the bad from the Lord.
I thought life was over. I was not convinced that God could do something to fix my life. Thankfully, I did not remain a bitter woman, lamenting my loses. Job's health was eventually restored, as was our wealth. God provided the family twice as much as we had before. Job and I went on to have more children - seven boys and three girls - and the daughters were the most beautiful in the land. We gained a new start, a new family to love.
Lord, I admit I forget my blessings, in the mist of difficulties. The next time I am tempted to complain, I plan to ask You to help me focus on the positives I see. May we all ask You to forgive our humanness, for temporarily complaining, and take hold of our faith once again. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen
