2014-08-13 - What Does It Look Like?
1 John 3:18 (The Living Bible) Little children, let us stop just saying we love people; let us really love them, and show it by our actions.
Ask a dozen people "what is love," and you may receive a dozen answers. If I were to ask you, "what does love look like to you," what would you say?
When driving home from work last week, I saw a home whose owner had built a ramp for his wife's wheelchair. That's what love looks like.
My dad took devoted care of my mother in her last several years of life, cooking for her, reading to her when she grew blind and caring for all her needs. That's what love looks like.
A mother teaches her daughter skills that will help her survive and thrive in the real world, not giving her everything she wants, but encouraging her to work hard in school, and teaching her to be a responsible citizen. That's what love looks like.
A husband and wife live devotedly with each other for 50 years, "through thick and thin." This is what love looks like.
A soldier puts himself between his fellow soldiers and a grenade; this is what love looks like.
A Christian is down on her/his knees, interceding for someone going through a difficult situation. That is what love looks like.
A police officer risks his life, disarming someone who could harm others with his weapon. This is what love looks like.
I am my husband's bee patrol / exectuioner, as he is seriously allergic to them. That is what love looks like.
For me, my husband uncomplainingly does the housework chore that makes me literally nauseous - dishwashing (food + water gags me). That is what love looks like.
Christ gave His life for our sins, so we wouldn't have to; that is what Love looks like.
What should our love of Christ, and our love of our fellow man, look like? We should be pondering that. That is what the Bible is all about, God's love for us, and the love we should be living out in our everyday lives.
Matthew 22:39-40 (CEV) The second most important commandment is like this one. And it is, "Love others as much as you love yourself." 40 All the Law of Moses and the Books of the Prophets are based on these two commandments.
