2014-08-25 - What Would Jabez's Mother Say?
'Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, 'Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm, so that I will be free from pain.' And God granted his request." (1 Chronicles 4:10)
Not all mothers are perfect. People probably think that about me. After all, how could I name my son "Jabez," meaning "born in pain?" Well, I'll tell you. At the time, I could not see past the distress my newborn child caused during childbirth. Now, he is so far removed from that infant. Jabez has become more honorable than his brothers.
Jabez did not base his life on a name, nor on what others saw in him. I am thankful for that. Jabez saw potential in himself. He asked God to enlarge his territory, to be kept from evil despite his namesake, and for God's presence.
My son wanted something better for himself, like most of us do. He took his feelings a step further. He was proactive, and asked God to bless him and to make him free from pain. Jabez held firm to his beliefs, and sought the One who could make his dreams turn into reality. God answered Jabez's prayer. For that, I am grateful. I am in awe, when I learn from my children, instead of always being the one to instill and teach.
Lord, Please bless and help me with everything that I have to do. I would appreciate Your company, everywhere I go. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
