2014-12-08 - What Would Ichabod say?
”As she was dying, the women attending her said, ’Don't despair; you have given birth to a son.’ But she did not respond or pay any attention.“ (1 Samuel 4:20)
”Here comes Icky,“ they said when they saw me. Kids can say some cruel things.
My own mother, near death, stuck me with the name Ichabod. It means the glory is gone. The women helping at my birth saw my existence positively; why couldn't my own mother? I was her flesh and blood, after all. I never got to ask her any of my questions. Shortly after I was born, my mother died.
Okay, so my mom had been through a lot. The ark of God was captured, and my dad Phinehas died in battle. When my grandfather Eli heard the news, he, too, died. When word reached my mother, she went into labor.
She was without loved ones during what was supposed to be a happy occasion. She did not know how to press on. My mother wasn't prepared for what lay ahead. Neither was I.
I am trying to learn from my family's mistakes, and to not focus inwardly so much. I want to be drawn to the positives, instead of letting the negatives spoil life's gifts and blessings.
Lord, Help me leave behind pessimistic and narrow-minded thinking. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
