[CF Devotionals] 2015-07-31 - Why You Should Attend Church

- - - - - - -

A while back, I asked a friend who liked to fish why he did not attend church. His answer was that God was everywhere, and that he and his fishing buddies could have church at the lake instead of going to a formal church. I could not deny that God was everywhere; however I do not think that is what the writer of Hebrews meant when he wrote, “And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, as so much the more as you see the Day approaching (NKJV 10:24-25).”

I personally look at church as if it is a cleaning station. I say this, because today we face so much negativity in the world, that after a while it rubs off on us, and we become like the world. However, the opposite effect can happen at a church. That is, the goodness/Christianity can rub off on us and cancel the negativity and allow us to reenter the world as one of God’s children.

Furthermore, 1 Corinthians 12:4 (NKJV) says, “There are diversities of gift, but the same Spirit.” Here Paul is talking about Spiritual gifts, and he says there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit provides them all. He then lists a few, e.g. one is given the word of wisdom, to another the word of knowledge, to another the gift of healing, etc. What I am saying is that if you are a child of the King, then the Holy Spirit is now dwelling within you, and He has given you a special gift(s), to aid in building up the body of Christ, which is the church. He wants you to use it/them for that purpose.

A week consists of 168 hours. If you attend church twice on Sunday, and once during mid-week, you will be spending approximately four hours in church per week. This equates to less than three percent of the time He allotted you for the week. Is this too much to give, to the One that gave you an abundant life on Earth and promises you a mansion in Heaven?

Heavenly Father, Lord God, I come to you thanking you for this day, and for the privilege of being your adopted child. I also thank you for the opportunity to go to Your house, to praise and worship you. I say this in the wonderful name of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior. Amen.

In Christian Love,
Rodney
