2015-02-08 - What would Eliab Say?
When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:6-7 NIV)
I don't get it. Why did God pick my little brother? Why should David become king, instead of me? I never thought David was destined for greatness. Samuel the prophet got my father and older sons together, and invited us to a sacrifice. David wasn't even invited; the shepherd boy was tending his sheep. All us seven were consecrated except him, and he is God's choice? Unbelievable.
I am the oldest. He's the youngest - and a shepherd, no less. We are both handsome, no denying that. I wonder if David will let me live in the palace. All that glamour without the hard work as a king, not a bad consolation prize.
Lord, Help me not be swayed by what my eyes see. May I look deeper than physical appearances. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
