2016-05-02 - The Power of Words
A fool is quick-tempered, but a wise person stays calm when insulted." (Proverbs 12:16 NLT)
I had a belt that I loved. It was a product of the disco 1970s era, and matched everything. It was made of clear plastic, with little bubbles of different colors all around the belt. One day, I wore it to elementary school. After lunch, a classmate noticed it and laughed. I really didn't know what was so funny about my belt. The boy pointed it out to another boy, who also snickered, then both went out to recess. I felt confused.
I thought my belt was special. To avoid hurt and ridicule, I never wore it to school again, and only wore it on weekends. The fact that I let others' opinion dictate my happiness, saddens me now. Solomon has a lot to say on the power of words. He states "Those who control their tongue will have a long life; opening your mouth can ruin everything." (Proverbs 13:3 NLT)
He goes on to say kind words help and heal. (Proverbs 15:4) It pays to take a moment and think before speaking. We may never know how our compliments or critiques affect another.
Lord, May I keep my joy at all costs, and use kind words that will encourage. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
Lord, You know what we need. I look to You, instead of worrying. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
