2017-02-11 - Following Jesus
Mark 10:25 (NIV)--Jesus looked at him and loved him. "One thing you lack, he said. "Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
In Mark 10:17-31, we find the story of the rich, young man who encountered Jesus. This man asked Jesus how to inherit eternal life. Jesus answered by telling him to follow God's commandments. The young man told Jesus that he had, in fact, kept the commandments. Jesus then told him to sell all his belongings and "follow me." This instruction pained the young man, as he was apparently very wealthy. Instead of selling his possessions, he sadly walked away from Jesus.
What is Jesus asking us to give up, to follow him? Is he asking us to give up possessions, lifestyles, or our habits? Are we willing to obey him, leave something behind, and follow him?
