2017-02-18 - What Is Important
When we moved to Georgia many years ago, my wife, Jan, and I needed to obtain state drivers licenses. To accomplish that task, we had to take a written test on the rules and regulations for our new state of residence. We went to the local Department of Motor Vehicles office and obtained booklets to study for the test. Inside these manuals were hundreds of pages of rules of the road. We studied for a week, before going to take the written test to get our licenses.
The Bible is sometimes called a book of God's rules and regulations. The Ten Commandments may be the most recognized rules. In Mark 12:28, a teacher of the law asks Jesus about the most important commandment or rule. Jesus replies that the most important is to "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength." Jesus went on to say, "The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" (Mark 12:29-31, NIV)
We should study the Bible to find out about God and Jesus, and what else God says to us in His Word. But in just a few verses in Mark, Jesus has explained to us the essence of what the Bible says about our behavior. We are to love God and each other. If we follow these instructions, we will master the rest.
