2017-04-29 - Are You Listening?
John the Baptist was sent to prepare the way for Jesus. John, who dressed in rough clothes, drew quite a crowd. Matthew tells us that people from Jerusalem, Judea, and the "whole region of Jordan" went out into the desert to hear John. His message was simple--repent. John must have been a persuasive speaker, as even the religious leaders and Roman soldiers came to hear him. Matthew says,"Confessing their sins, they were baptized in the Jordan River." (Matthew 3:6)
Today, we hear many voices calling to us. We are living in the information age, with a world of information at our fingertips. On an American television show that was popular in the 1990s, the primary star played Frasier, a psychiatrist who had a radio show. His slogan was "I'm listening" and he meant to all of his callers. Whom do we listen to? Do we hear God's call? And once we hear God's voice, do we respond? Do we repent? Do we share the good news with others? To whom are you listening today?
