2017-10-02 - Seeking Blessings
The wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the LORD. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.”
Frightened for her children’s’ lives, a widow sought the counsel of Elisha the prophet. Her late husband was a seminary student and they had two sons. At her husband’s death, he left the family penniless and in debt. Their only remaining possession was a small bottle of olive oil. In order to pay off the creditors, the sons would be sold as slaves. This woman wasn’t to blame for her family’s financial crisis, but she had to find a solution.
Elisha suggested she collect as many empty jars and bottles as possible from neighbors and friends. In private, the woman poured the oil to the tippy top of these borrowed containers. When they ran out of containers, the oil stopped flowing. She and her sons witnessed a miracle! Elisha then told the woman to sell the oil to pay off the debts and she and her sons would live off the left over money. Her family would never have to worry about finances again.
This woman had endless faith. She never questioned Elisha’s unrealistic plan that became a miraculous one. Just because we may mess things up God does not change. He picks us up and we start over. We should not get impatient waiting for the victory to come our way. We may have to wait beyond the first, second, or even fifth try.
This widow found herself in a situation beyond her control. She was destitute and faced the loss of her two children. The woman in debt called on a man of God, someone in a position to help her. Both Elisha the prophet and this woman saw outside the box. Logically a small amount of oil cannot possibly fill so many jars, but when God is involved logic takes a back seat.
Lord, May I not lean on fear when I am faced with challenges, which seem to grab me at every turn. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
