[CF Devotionals] 2017-12-06 - Hold Fast

- - - - - - -

You may have heard a song by Sam and Dave called Hold on, I’m Comin’ that came out in 1966 on their debut album, with that song as its title. Songs can have their own messages and origins via the musician and writer, yet they are also a gift to the listener. This song with just the title seen makes me think of God. He’s really the only one that can rescue me. That isn’t to say I don’t love the song in its own context, and the guys who clearly had quite a bit of fun making the record. I also have a silly memory of my Mom, perhaps an odd one to some, of her choosing her own memorial service music and joking about including that song, not long after being diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease. She was not well, but still felt like herself in most ways at that point, and so the concept of the song made us laugh. And I know that even in the midst of one of the most painful and emotionally draining year in her life and mine, she would prefer me to hold on to the good stuff. My Mom kept me safe, warm, loved unconditionally, taught me many things, forgave me when I screwed things up, held me when my heart was broken, corrected me when I needed it, showed mercy, lifted me up when I was down, shared silliness whenever possible, sang with me as we did housework with records playing, and had a grace beyond compare to any I have known - especially considering all I saw her endure in her short life. So I hold fast to the real woman I knew and not “a thing that happened to her,” and believe me it isn’t always easy. She also told me “no one ever said it would be easy,” and I hear her voice in my head saying it now, as life continues. Her words, too, bring me comfort, mostly knowing even being that voice in my head, she is always part of me.

The challenges of life are unique to each of us and have a purpose, but the good stuff keeps me going in spite of what life tosses my way. God has given us good stuff as well, and He longs to keep us going giving us strength as only he can. All we have to do is ask, and He will come running. He gave everything so we could be with him. And in the end, we can be sure of the fact when we do hold on, he is comin’!! I’m so very grateful.

“let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised ;) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:” (Hebrews 10:22-24)

“Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil.” (1 Thessalonians 5:20-22)

“He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings[a] we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter. May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope,” (2 Thessalonians 2:14-16 NIV)

“Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.” (Titus 1:9)

{Hold Fast (in Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance by: James Strong) comes from the Greek roots found in notes with words in the Greek Katecho(2722), Krateo (2902), Avri(472) and root words within those entries. Collectively from those origins the idea means retaining or seizing and being joined in a Godly manner by any means, beyond measure, obtaining with vigor in order to gain power and strength. }
