2017-12-21 - Why Did Jesus Come?
Luke 2:1,4-5 [ Jesus’ Birth in Bethlehem ] Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth. Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, in order to register along with Mary, who was engaged to him, and was with child.
One of the big questions surrounding Jesus' coming to Earth is, "Why?" Why did He have to leave Heaven and put on human flesh? The first phrase of John 3:16 says. "God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son …" What an amazing statement that is. When Adam and Eve fell in the garden God could have reset everything in a moments time creating Adam and Eve version 2. Before they were created God knew they would fall. They were given free will and they violated the one restriction placed upon them. How did God know they would fall?
Rev 17:8 “The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is about to come up out of the abyss and go to destruction. And those who dwell on the earth, whose name has not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, will wonder when they see the beast, that he was and is not and will come. [ emphasis mine ]
God is omnipotent and omnipresent. He is all-knowing and is in every place and time at once. From the very beginning He knew who would accept His plan for salvation, Their names were written in the book of life. The plan to provide a sinless, perfect sacrifice for our redemption was not a last minute fix. It was prepared and in place (Rom 5:8) All the players from the star, to the wise men, to Mary and Joseph, to Caesar Augustus and his decree, the angels, the shepherds and Gabriel were all in place at the right time. Jesus' birth came as the first active step in that plan to provide a perfect sinless sacrificial lamb Whose blood would once for all time to pay for the debt of sin owed by humanity, and to break the power of death.
He came to live among us and experience the same temptations we do. He came to tell us that about the heart of God toward us, that He loves us. He showed us God's forgiveness, grace and mercy, His power over sickness and death - and more. All of this would be wrapped up in His willing sacrifice on the cross. It would be made even clearer to His Disciples between His resurrection and ascension.
The arrival of Jesus as a baby was the first physical step toward Calvary. All the steps along the way show us God's control, His mercy and grace, and love for His fallen creation. Jesus paid the debt we had no ability to pay and offers that freedom to anyone who will come with a repentant heart. (John 6:35,37-38,44)
Father God, Thank You for sending Your Son in a way that none of us would expect. He came teaching and showing Your love for us, walking the path You laid out for Him. Help me follow the path assigned to me each day so that I would be Your Ambassador. Amen.
Grace & Peace,
